Albert Shanker



Shanker, Albert (1928– ), U.S. labor leader. A New York City public school teacher (1952–59), he was active in the teachers' drive for unionization and, as president of the United Federation of Teachers (1964–74), led strikes over pay and pedagogical issues. He has headed the American Federation of Teachers since 1974.
