Shad



Shad, deep-bodied food fish of the herring family (genus Alosa), which grows to about 3 lb (1.4 kg) and 2 ft (61 cm). Native to Atlantic waters from Newfoundland to Florida, the shad was successfully introduced to Pacific waters (c.1871). Characterized by bluish coloring with silver sides and a spineless upper fin, it swims up freshwater rivers to spawn. Some shad is smoked and sold as kippers.
