Georges Seurat

Seurat, Georges (1859–91), French painter, one of a small group representing neoimpressionism or postimpressionism. Interested in color both scientifically and artistically, he invented pointillism, in which discrete points of color are placed to create patterns that are perceived at a distance as complex tones. His works include A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1884–46).
