United States Secret Service



Secret Service, United States, branch of the U.S. Treasury Department. Established 1865 to suppress the counterfeiting of currency, it became responsible for protecting the president after the assassination of President William McKinley (1901). It now also guards the vice president, the president-elect, presidential candidates, and former presidents.
