Publius Cornelius Scipio



Scipio, Publius Cornelius (Scipio Africanus Major, Scipio the Elder; 234?–183? B.C.), Roman general. Scipio defeated the Carthaginian forces under Hannibal in the Second Punic War (218–201 B.C.), fighting in Spain and winning decisively at Zama, in North Africa (202 B.C.). In 199 B.C. he was elected to public office, serving until 184 B.C.
