Schlesinger, name of 2 famous 20th-century U.S. historians. Arthur Meier Schlesinger (1888–1965) is best known for his U.S. history The Rise of the City, 1878–1898 (1933) from the series he edited, A History of American Life. He stressed the cultural, social, and economic context of history. Arthur Meier Schlesinger, Jr. (1917– ), his son, won Pulitzer prizes for both The Age of Jackson (1945) and A Thousand Days (1966), the latter written after a period as special assistant to President John F. Kennedy.
