Jeanne Mathilde Sauvé



Sauvé, Jeanne Mathilde (1922– ), first woman to serve as Speaker of the House of Commons (1980–84) and governor general (representative of the British monarch; 1984–89) of Canada. Sauvé worked for UNESCO (from 1950) and as a journalist and broadcaster (1952–72) before being elected to the House of Commons (1972). She served under Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau as minister of state for science and technology (1972), of the environment (1974), and of communications (1975).
