Sardis



Sardis, capital of the ancient kingdom of Lydia. Its remains go back to at least 1300 B.C., but it may be even older. It was the first city to mint gold and silver coins. Destroyed by an earthquake in A.D. 17, Sardis was later rebuilt. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times until its final destruction by the Sassanian Persians c. A.D. 615.
