Sardinia



Sardinia, Italian island in the Mediterranean, 120 mi (193 km) to the west of mainland Italy and just south of Corsica. It is a mountainous area of 9,301 sq mi (24,090 sq km), with some agriculture on the coastal plains and upland valleys. Wheat, olives, and vines are grown, and sheep and goats raised; fish and cork are also exported. Zinc, antimony, and lead are extracted from the ancient mines, and tourism is growing in importance. The island is an autonomous region of Italy, with its capital at Cagliari.
