Sarajevo



Sarajevo (pop. 415,600), capital and cultural center of Bosnia and Hercegovina. It retains a strong Muslim character and is famous for its many Muslim mosques. Austrian Archduke Francis Ferdinand was assassinated at Sarajevo in 1914, precipitating World War I. During the civil war that started in the early 1990s Sarajevo was badly damaged and social and economic life virtually came to a stand still.
