Battle of San Jacinto



San Jacinto, Battle of, decisive engagement (Apr. 21, 1836) in the war for Texan independence. It was won by General Sam Houston, whose troops, though outnumbered, surprised and defeated the Mexicans under General Antonio López de Santa Anna, thereby establishing Texas as an independent republic.
