Sandinistas

Sandinistas, leftist Nicaraguan revolutionary movement that overthrew the Somoza family dictatorship in 1979. Named after César Sandino, a Nicaraguan patriot and guerrilla leader of the 1920s, it assembled a broad coalition in the country to defeat Anastasio Somoza and his hated Civil Guard. After the revolution the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) ruled through a 5-man junta.
