Louis Stephen Saint Laurent



Saint Laurent, Louis Stephen (1882–1973), prime minister of Canada (1948–57). Internationally, St. Laurent played an important role in the founding of the United Nations (1945). As prime minister he strengthened Canada's position in the Commonwealth of Nations and was instrumental in founding the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Domestically, he achieved the incorporation of Newfoundland as a Canadian province in 1949.
