Saginaw

Saginaw (pop. 77,508), city in southern Michigan, seat of Saginaw County, located on the Saginaw River about 85 mi (137 km) northwest of Detroit. The original settlements of Saginaw (1820) and East Saginaw (1849) were expanded to form the city (1889). A fur trade center from the early 19th century, it was also a lumber center until the lumber supply was exhausted in the late 19th century. The city now manufactures automobiles and machinery and processes sugar beets and other agricultural products. The Saginaw River connects the city with Saginaw Bay, part of Lake Huron.
