Safety valve

Safety valve, relief device that automatically opens to allow excess pressure to escape. Sealed by a compressed spring or a weight, it is held open until the pressure has fallen by a predetermined amount. Safety valves are used on all pressurized vessels (e.g., steam boilers) to prevent explosion.
