Sacramento River

Sacramento River, longest tributary in California, rising in the Klamath Mountains in the north, flowing southwest for about 380 mi (610 km) to join the San Joaquin River in the Central Valley, before exiting at San Francisco Bay. It is navigable for large vessels as far as Sacramento, 67 mi (108 km) upstream, the major port and largest city on the river. Shasta and Keswick are the chief dams of the Sacramento, which contributes its water to the Central Valley Project (irrigation for the southern part of the state).
