Sacramento

Sacramento (pop. 382,800), capital city of California since 1854, and seat of Sacramento County, at the confluence of the Sacramento and American rivers in central California. Its economy is based primarily upon the business of government, military manufactures, and agriculture, for which it is a shipping, marketing, and processing center. Its history dates back to 1839, when John Sutter established a colony there on a land grant from Mexico. After the discovery of gold at nearby Sutter's Mill, Sacramento became a boom town.
