Ruthenia



Ruthenia, region in western Ukraine, southwest of the Carpathian Mountains, covering 4,940 sq mi (12,800 sq km). Formerly part of Hungary, then of Czechoslovakia (from 1919), it was ceded to the USSR (1945). The region came under independent Ukrainian rule in 1991. Uzhgorod is capital of this mountainous and densely forested region.
