Book of Ruth



Ruth, Book of, name of Old Testament book in the Bible. It focuses on the love and loyalty of Ruth, described as a descendant of King David and the royal family of Israel. As a widowed non-Israelite, she gave up her home in Moab to follow Naomi, her mother-in-law, to Bethlehem. There, after working to secure a life for both herself and Naomi, she married Boaz, a kinsman to Naomi. Through the sacrifice and effort of Ruth, an Israelite family line continued. This Old Testament book, completed c. 2,500 years ago, is appreciated for its vivid characterization of Ruth and for its literary qualities.
