Russian

Russian, chief official language of Russia, member of the East Slavic Indo-European languages (Byelorussian and Ukrainian diverged c.1300). Russian is written in the 33-character Cyrillic alphabet introduced in the 800s by Christian missionaries. By combining colloquialism with the formal Church Slavonic, the poet Pushkin did much to shape modern literary Russian, which is based on the Moscow dialect.
