Lord John Russell

Russell, Lord John (1792–1878), British political figure, leader of the British reform movement. As a member of the House of Commons, he helped bring about the repeal of the Test and Corporation acts, which enabled Protestants who did not belong to the Church of England to participate in politics for the first time. He also helped extend the right to vote to more middle-class men through the Reform Bill of 1832. Russell later served as prime minister (1846–52, 1865, 1866).
