Ruanda-Urundi

Ruanda-Urundi, Belgium-supervised United Nations territory (1946), which later became the independent nations of Rwanda and Burundi (1962). Pygmies called Twa, a Bantu people called Hutu (or Buhutu), and Watusi are the native inhabitants of this area. The Germans laid claim to Ruanda-Urundi in the late-19th century. The Belgic gained a mandate here through the League of Nations (1923). This area is bordered by Zaïre to the west, Uganda to the north, and Tanzania to the east. Lake Tanganyika borders Burundi to the south.
