Royal Household of Great Britain

Royal Household of Great Britain, those who administer the private business and court life of the monarchy of Great Britain. Many of these positions, established in the Middle Ages, are hereditary. Today these offices are ceremonial. Over the centuries British monarchs have adjusted the roster of royal attendants. Among the many positions, the lord chamberlain administers ceremonial affairs and is head of the Royal Household; the lord steward governs financial matters of the Royal Household; and ladies of the bedchamber, ladies in waiting, and the mistress of the robes are the Queen's attendants.
