William Starke Rosecrans



Rosecrans, William Starke (1819–98), Union general in the U.S. Civil War. After early successes in West Virginia and Mississippi, he was given command of the Army of the Cumberland (1862) but was heavily defeated at the Battle of Chickamauga (1863) and relieved of command.
