Richmond



Richmond (pop. 221,900), state capital of Virginia; capital of the Confederacy (1861–65). Located at the navigation head of the James River, it is a port and a financial and distribution center, as well as being an important industrial city, with tobacco and food processing, chemicals, metals, and wood products. It has many historic buildings and sites, including the Capitol (1785), designed by Thomas Jefferson, and Hollywood Cemetery, where some 18,000 Confederate soldiers are buried. Richmond National Battlefied Park contains several Civil War battle sites.
