Matteo Ricci



Ricci, Matteo (1552–1610), Italian Jesuit missionary. He entered China in 1583, learned Chinese, and eventually won acceptance. He introduced Western mathematics, astronomy, and geography to the Chinese, and sent the first detailed reports of China to the West.
