Regina

Regina (pop. 175,100), capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The city, on the Trans-Canada Highway, lies in the plains of southcentral Saskatchewan, about 100 mi (161 km) from the U.S. border. Founded in 1883 as the new capital of the Northwest Territories, it became the capital of the new province of Saskatchewan in 1905. The community originally bore the picturesque name Pile O'Bones, but was renamed Regina in honor of Queen Victoria. Major industries include steel and steel products, agricultural machinery, meat packing, and oil refining. The city is also the headquarters of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool.
