Ragtime



Ragtime, style of piano playing in which the left hand provides harmony and a firm beat, while the right hand plays the melody, usually syncopated. Famous exponents of the style, which was the immediate predecessor of jazz, are Scott Joplin and Jelly-Roll Morton.
