Quito



Quito (pop. 1,100,800), capital and second largest city of Ecuador and oldest capital in South America. It is located just south of the equator at the foot of the Pichincha volcano, at an altitude of 9,350 ft (2,850 m). Seized from the Incas by a Spanish conquistador in 1534, it is famous for its Spanish colonial architecture.
