Pretoria



Pretoria (pop. 822,900), administrative capital of South Africa. It is also the capital of the province Pretoria- Witwatersrand-Vereeniging. Founded by the Boers in 1855, the city was named for Andries Pretorius, who defeated the Zulus in 1838. It became the administrative capital of the Union of South Africa when it was formed in 1910 and is a major manufacturing and cultural enter.
