Power

Power, in the social sciences, the ability to exercise control over others. Power is most often exerted by individuals, groups, or nations through superior physical strength, social position, or intellect. Greater resources or attributes usually give a person or entity power to impose penalties on those who fail to yield to their demands. Fear of the imposition of those penalties is what most often keeps weaker individuals or nations from rebelling against those holding power over them.
