Port Said

Port Said (pop. 399,800), port city in Egypt. Located on the Mediterranean Sea at the northern terminus of the Suez Canal, Port Said was founded in 1859 as a camp for workers building the canal. Because of its key location, it is a major commercial center for ships using the canal and the site of a free trade zone established by the Egyptian government to encourage commerce.
