Port Moresby



Port Moresby (pop. 145,300), capital and largest city of Papua New Guinea. It lies on a harbor of the Coral Sea in the southeastern part of the country and was founded in 1873 by the British explorer Capt. John Moresby. During World War II (1939–45) Port Moresby served as an Allied military operations center for the South Pacific.
