Portland

Portland (pop. 445,400), largest city in Oregon, a leading West Coast port. It stands in northwestern Oregon on the Willamette River near its junction with the Columbia River, c.60 mi (97 km) due east of the Pacific Ocean. Ocean-going ships reach Portland by river, enabling it to handle more dry cargo than any other Pacific port. Lumber, fruit, and wheat are the main exports. Important educational institutions include the University of Oregon's schools of medicine and dentistry, Portland State College, and the Roman Catholic University of Portland. The city's rose gardens are nationally famous.
