Fitz-John Porter

Porter, Fitz-John (1822–1901), U.S. Army officer. During the Civil War, he served as a corps commander in the Army of the Potomac and fought in the Shenandoah Valley and Peninsular campaigns. During the second Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) in 1862, the Union commander, Gen. John Pope, accused him of failing to carry out orders. Porter was court-martialed, found guilty, and discharged from the army in 1863. In 1879 his case was reviewed and he was exonerated. He was restored to his rank 7 years later.
