Porter, U.S. naval officers, father and son. David Porter (1780–1843) took part in the war against Tripoli (1801–5) and during the War of 1812 he became the first United States naval officer to operate a warship in the Pacific Ocean. He was also the foster father of David G. Farragut, one of the greatest Union naval commanders of the Civil War. David Dixon Porter (1813–91) served under Farragut in the Civil War and played key roles in the captures of New Orleans, Vicksburg, and other major Southern ports.
