Port Elizabeth



Port Elizabeth (pop. 652,000), city in South Africa. Situated on a bay of the Indian Ocean, it was founded in 1799. The modern city was laid out in 1820 by Sir Rufane Donkin, who named it for his wife, Lady Elizabeth. Port Elizabeth is a major seaport and manufacturing center with important rubber and automobile industries.
