Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, governing agency for port-owned facilities in New York City and adjacent New Jersey. Incorporated in 1921 to develop and improve commerce in and around New York Harbor, the Port Authority operates bridges, tunnels, marine terminals, airports, and buildings such as the “twin towers” of the 1,350 ft (411 m) World Trade Center. It is governed by 12 commissioners, 6 from each of the 2 states, and maintains trade development offices in major United States and foreign cities.
