Pork barrel

Pork barrel, pejorative U.S. term for government spending on local, presumably unnecessary, projects. The term, which originated in the 19th century and derives from the practice of salting pork to store in barrels, is used to indicate the wastefulness and selfishness of legislators who vote on such expenditures to reward political allies and direct funds into their districts.
