Plymouth



Plymouth (pop. 257,500), city in Devon county, southwest England, on Plymouth sound, from which the Mayflower sailed in 1620. It was also the home port of Sir Walter Raleigh's and Sir Francis Drake's expeditions to the Americas and was the launching point of the British fleet in its attack on the Spanish Armada in 1588. It is now an important maritime center and naval base.
