Pipe

Pipe, musical instrument consisting of a tube of wood or metal, that produces sounds when air is blown through it. Holes along the pipe's length are covered and uncovered by fingers to produce a variety of notes. The length of the pipe, as well as whether it is stopped or open at one end, also affects the sounds it creates. The pipe was one of the first musical instruments. Other wind instruments—such as the flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, and pipe organ—developed from it.
