Pilot whale

Pilot whale, also called blackfish, any of several species of smalltoothed whales (genus Globicephala) of the dolphin family. Pilot whales are named after those members that lead the large schools—sometimes in the hundreds or thousands—in which they travel. They can detect obstacles in the water through a fatty organ called the melon. Black with white on the underside, pilot whales can weigh up to 2.5 tons (2.3 m tons) and are about 20 ft (6 m) in length. They live mainly in warmer oceans.
