Pilotfish

Pilotfish (Naucrates ductor), fish (family Carangidae) once believed to guide sharks and even ships. Pilot fish grow to 2 ft (0.6 m) and are patterned with conspicuous bands. When young, they shelter under jellyfish or pieces of floating seaweed and driftwood. As adults, they swim very close to sharks, whales, sailing ships, or manta rays. It is thought that they feed on scraps from the shark's meals, but this does not explain why they follow ships or whales.
