Susan La Flesche Picotte



Picotte, Susan La Flesche (1865–1915), first Native American woman to become a physician. A member of the Omaha tribe and daughter of the chief, she became the leading physician on the tribe's Nebraska reservation (1891–94) after earning her M.D. (1889) from the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania. She worked to improve health conditions for her people, founding a hospital on the reservation that was named for her (1913).
