Philosophe, member of the 18th-century French school of thinkers, scientists, and belles lettrists who believed that the methodology of science should be applied to contemporary social, economic, and political problems. Inspired by René Descartes and the school of Skepticism, they included Montesquieu, Voltaire, Denis Diderot, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
