Pharynx

Pharynx, part of the digestive system, back of the throat where the mouth (oropharynx) and nose (nasopharynx) pass back into the esophagus. It contains specialized muscle for swallowing. The food and air channels are kept functionally separate so that swallowing does not interfere with breathing and speech.
