Marius Petipa



Petipa, Marius (1819–1910), French dancer and choreographer who created the modern classical ballet. An outstanding dancer and mime, he joined the Russian ballet at St. Petersburg in 1847, becoming chief choreographer in 1869. There, he created over 60 full-length ballets, including The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and The Sleeping Beauty.
