Shimon Peres



Peres, Shimon (1923– ), prime minister (1985–86) of the National Unity government of Israel. He was instrumental in the withdrawal of the Israeli troops from Lebanon in 1985. Peres, Rabin and Arafat were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 for their contributions to the peace proces in Israel and the Middle East. Peres became interim premier after Rabin's murder in Nov. 1995 but lost the 1996 elections.
