Penobscot River



Penobscot River, longest river in Maine. From the head of its longest branch it runs 350 mi (563 km) to its mouth at Penobscot Bay on the Atlantic Ocean. The Penobscot rises near the Canadian border and flows east and then south past Bangor. During the 19th century it was used for transporting timber to the coast for shipment to eastern cities.
