Pelée



Pelée, active volcano in Martinique, an island in the French West Indies. Rising 4,583 ft (1,397 m) above sea level, it had minor eruptions in 1702 and 1851. In 1902 a major eruption occurred, destroying the port of St. Pierre and killing approximately 38,000 people. Between 1929 and 1932 there were several milder eruptions. A volcano observatory on top of the volcano monitors its activity.
